15 Apr 5 Tips To Prevent A Car Accident
Even though car accidents can happen to the best of drivers, most of them can be prevented. Here are just five things you can do to keep yourself from crashing on the highway.
1. Keep Your Car in Good Condition
Many accidents happen because of a poorly maintained vehicle. Keep up on your car’s maintenance so you can be sure that your tires are road-worthy, your brakes work properly, and your engine won’t die on you in the middle of a busy intersection.
2. Keep Distractions to a Minimum
Distracted driving is a big problem that seems to be getting worse with time. While it’s okay to have a smartphone on your person in case of an emergency, it shouldn’t have your full attention while you’re driving. If you must make phone calls on the road, mount your phone on your dashboard or get a hands-free set. Texting is right out.
This also applies to other things that could distract you. Avoid messing with your car’s radio while you drive, and by no means should you be wearing headphones or ear buds when you drive.
3. Drive Defensively
Since you can’t control what other drivers are doing, you need to watch out for them. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, and always check your blind spots even when you have the right of way. If the vehicle in the lane next to you is getting too close to you, get as far away from them as you can.
4. Watch Your Speed
You might think you can control your vehicle at high speeds, and you may be right under most circumstances. Unfortunately, you can never know when you have to stop suddenly. The faster you drive, the longer it will take for you to stop, so slow down. You won’t get to where you need to be any sooner, but you’ll get there in one piece.
5. When In Doubt, Stay Home
There are lots of reasons why driving may be unsafe. Maybe it just snowed and the roads are too slippery, or maybe it’s raining and visibility is poor. Maybe you’re just too exhausted to stay alert on the road. Whatever the reason may be, if you think driving is going to be dangerous, stay where you are. Cancel any plans you may have, and tell whomever might be waiting on you that you just don’t feel safe driving at that time.
