19 Oct Car Accident Statistics for Millennial Drivers
Statistics do not paint a rosy picture when it comes to the driving habits of millennials. In fact, experts say this is a factor in the 7 percent increase in car fatalities in the 2015 to 2016 period.
Millennials are men and women born in the early 80s to early nineties.
Risky and Erratic
The American Automobile Association conducted a survey of people in the millennial age group. Almost 90 percent of the licensed drivers in this age group that were part of the survey reported at least one driving habit that experts label “risky” or “erratic.”
Types of risky behavior included:
- Driving twice as fast as other cars on the road
- Ignoring traffic signals and running red lights
- Using a cell phone while driving, especially texting
Over 10 percent of the millennials in the survey said it was okay to go 10 miles over the limit in a school zone. About half said they had run a red light, even though they could have stopped in time. Almost 80 percent said they had texted while driving.
More Fatalities
What really alarmed AAA was the fact that, “Some of the drivers 19-24 believe that their dangerous driving behavior is acceptable.” Executive director David Yang feels strongly that they need to understand how much this attitude and their behaviors are contributing to the rise in road deaths.
